So, here's something different- I've designed and constructed a light table. The acrylic plate was scavenged from a broken food display case, and the pieces of wood were parts of the packaging for a washing machine. The construction consists of three interlocking frames, which are connected by hinges. It's sturdy in functional mode, and little more than an inch wide when collapsed.

A few years back I made functioning crow quills from actual crow feathers. There was a peculiar satisfaction in that, and there is the same satisfaction in this. The satisfaction of making one's own tools, however unsophisticated they may be.

Here are some ideation sketches from my sketchbook, done in preparation for two recent editorial illustrations. Sketches like these are perhaps the single most important step in my creative process, and I hardly ever begin work on an illustration without this initial exploration stage.

These sketches were produced with graphite, coloured pencils and white ink in my moleskin sketchbook. They are basically efforts to record peak moments in my stream of consciousness as I deliberate upon that which is to be illustrated.

Once I am satisfied with the ideas produced in this intial stage, I present my work to the client, who picks and chooses which particular idea I am to proceed with. When finalizing the illustrations, the ideation sketches serve as blueprints, and allow me to focus on simply getting the work done according to plan:

The specifics of each project, the media used and the particulars of the techniques involved will vary, and there are usually unique challenges and and problems with each production.

But the general process is always the same.
